years after immigrating to Toronto, Canada. I spent several weeks reconnecting with childhood friends and forming new friendships, hoping to regain a sense of familiarity with a place I once called home. Being back made me realize how much I had changed since I left. At times, I struggled to find a rhythm in conversation, but photographing felt more natural. Through photography, I found a way to reconnect with old friends, navigate our changing relationships, and reorient myself within a place that no longer felt entirely familiar. Repose and Renewal is a series of intimate photographs centered on rekindled friendships in Cebu. The photographs emerge from conversations, shared histories, and moments of recognition through which we reckon with who we have become. Despite how time and distance have shaped us differently, I photographed them in place of the words I couldn’t convey.&nbsp; https://jmdelante.com/Finding-Comfort-Under-The-Sky Mon, 06 Jun 2022 03:44:12 +0000 John Monic Delante https://jmdelante.com/Finding-Comfort-Under-The-Sky <img width="1680" height="2100" width_o="1680" height_o="2100" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4b1360c6b74ab8992d0136043837b824380fb7bbcd4f10d49dcee5306f3bd1af/thesis_snail-copy.jpg" data-mid="144625672" border="0" data-scale="36" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4b1360c6b74ab8992d0136043837b824380fb7bbcd4f10d49dcee5306f3bd1af/thesis_snail-copy.jpg" /> <img width="1670" height="2100" width_o="1670" height_o="2100" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4062a3df106740611157d5f946f36e24f5abecaf457b05cd2687d791d98f098d/thesis_myoutreach-copy.jpg" data-mid="144625671" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4062a3df106740611157d5f946f36e24f5abecaf457b05cd2687d791d98f098d/thesis_myoutreach-copy.jpg" /> <img width="4964" height="7050" width_o="4964" height_o="7050" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/207a3188b4070cc25caa28f991c473a1965166b7b2b50083963c5383428c5d07/thesis_passport1.jpg" data-mid="144625725" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/207a3188b4070cc25caa28f991c473a1965166b7b2b50083963c5383428c5d07/thesis_passport1.jpg" /> <img width="1666" height="2100" width_o="1666" height_o="2100" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9b89324b94c5f5c8b2460d38ff16dc613c0a1fda38d0ed4d52ec307d23d328c3/thesis_homage-copy.jpg" data-mid="144625667" border="0" data-scale="42" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9b89324b94c5f5c8b2460d38ff16dc613c0a1fda38d0ed4d52ec307d23d328c3/thesis_homage-copy.jpg" /> <img width="1687" height="2100" width_o="1687" height_o="2100" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f1acf97f79af5c96e21982dbd8d6ae358070e0700bc10cef5db97ac803ac758f/thesis_handkerchief-copy.jpg" data-mid="144625665" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f1acf97f79af5c96e21982dbd8d6ae358070e0700bc10cef5db97ac803ac758f/thesis_handkerchief-copy.jpg" /> <img width="1693" height="2100" width_o="1693" height_o="2100" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/5b1e0a18d84d392e87f9db9bbee7345bc6c37aaead02e8f73e6524fbcdef4173/thesis_heirloom-copy.jpg" data-mid="144625666" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/5b1e0a18d84d392e87f9db9bbee7345bc6c37aaead02e8f73e6524fbcdef4173/thesis_heirloom-copy.jpg" /> <img width="1680" height="2100" width_o="1680" height_o="2100" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/48959e89a0a7bee4f8f5b254e256156705fec3842a71454ccc5316269a48ea9b/thesis_graduationday-copy.jpg" data-mid="144625664" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/48959e89a0a7bee4f8f5b254e256156705fec3842a71454ccc5316269a48ea9b/thesis_graduationday-copy.jpg" /> <img width="1680" height="2100" width_o="1680" height_o="2100" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/90e0f710ea5cda7cfacd7b0a0ba6c1e08a396ec168bc96a77b4f1021ae2040be/thesis_stnino-copy.jpg" data-mid="144625673" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/90e0f710ea5cda7cfacd7b0a0ba6c1e08a396ec168bc96a77b4f1021ae2040be/thesis_stnino-copy.jpg" /> A year after moving to Canada from the Philippines at age 17, I experienced a period of uncertainty. Feeling young and unfamiliar, I searched for comfort, but felt alien in my environment. I held on to memories and objects from Cebu as I navigated the distance between the life I had left behind and the life I was beginning to build in Toronto. Through photography, I began to examine this sense of displacement and consider how home and belonging could be understood within my new surroundings. Finding Comfort Under the Sky is a photographic series that seeks to reconcile the cultural duality of my experience between the Philippines and Canada. The work foregrounds objects I brought from Cebu, such as an old passport photograph, an heirloom rosary, and a blue collarless henley shirt. They carry personal histories, but their meanings shift when removed from their original context. Through photography, I recontextualize them within my immediate environment and begin to consider how these fragments from my past could coexist with my present life in Toronto. .&nbsp; https://jmdelante.com/In-My-Memories-I-Held-The-Sun-In-My-Hands Mon, 06 Jun 2022 03:59:26 +0000 John Monic Delante https://jmdelante.com/In-My-Memories-I-Held-The-Sun-In-My-Hands <img width="5472" height="3648" width_o="5472" height_o="3648" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0764f3e211011fa099b30da580c9b8baf51a3fe27ffa4ccac6bd882c8b110f89/install_shot1t.jpg" data-mid="144626425" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0764f3e211011fa099b30da580c9b8baf51a3fe27ffa4ccac6bd882c8b110f89/install_shot1t.jpg" /> <img width="5350" height="3648" width_o="5350" height_o="3648" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4c61b56f0b8b297515eb19f3f01faa85ff91484faddffe009f6aa6781607c6fe/install_sho2t.jpg" data-mid="144626407" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4c61b56f0b8b297515eb19f3f01faa85ff91484faddffe009f6aa6781607c6fe/install_sho2t.jpg" /> <img width="5472" height="3648" width_o="5472" height_o="3648" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/6c1bd8d55d8d4bd1f5891763cba668371a175d813d77ad4aa54f2c2713e931ed/install_sho3t.jpg" data-mid="144626408" border="0" data-scale="70" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/6c1bd8d55d8d4bd1f5891763cba668371a175d813d77ad4aa54f2c2713e931ed/install_sho3t.jpg" /> <img width="5472" height="3648" width_o="5472" height_o="3648" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/99bba54e542c5fd0fec6b7cb5692456af1b1eba988426eecf7d435ab7fb36646/install_sho4t.jpg" data-mid="144626409" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/99bba54e542c5fd0fec6b7cb5692456af1b1eba988426eecf7d435ab7fb36646/install_sho4t.jpg" /> In My Memories, I Held The Sun In My Hands is a collective of images from various series focusing on our own experiences with identity and the idea of home. Through a collective experience of immigration followed by an isolation that came with cultural dissonance, our respective projects revisit our connections to our birthplaces to see the shifts in our identity and what it means to belong. The resulting exhibition is an amalgamation of these fragmented relationships with our past, and attempts to reconnect with our respective heritage; piercing together the realities of our own identities and where we fit amongst our past and present selves.&nbsp; As artists our experience is not a monolith, yet we have found connections within our collective memories of an identity fragmented through immigration. Through portraiture and personal archives, Delante and Rafa question the place of love, in all capacities of the word, through time, distance, secrets and things left unspoken. In his series Repose &amp; Renewal (2022), John Delante reflects upon his changing relationships with close friends he has known since adolescence, considering how time and distance have weathered their closeness. Examining the changes culture and proximity have had on his own development, Delante uses the camera to create a replacement language, communicating in ways that words cannot convey. These portraits also serve as a reflection of himself—versions of his identity that could have been—if he had stayed in Cebu instead of moving to Toronto at the age of 17. Finding comfort and connection in photographing the people and places that echo his past, Delante connects these images to others from his personal archive, bridging the gaps of time and space to reunite him with home. Ananna Rafa’s Searching For Mustard Fields (2021–22) explores the secrecy and concealment interlaced with romantic love in the South Asian Diaspora. These ephemeral moments of affection operate as acts of defiance, reflecting the artist’s own desire to freely love in a culture that considers an individual’s ability to choose romantic and matrimonial partners from a place of love as taboo. Photographing her subjects’ relationships with a voyeuristic gaze, the artist evokes a presence looming over each couple in their private, tender moments—a presence experienced in Rafa’s own relationship. Throughout the project, she alludes to the Bollywood movies of her childhood, whose stories represent an idealistic version of love, often far from the lived experiences of South Asian youth. Rafa utilizes these stories of radical love defiantly, juxtaposing them with the limitations placed on intimate relationships—garnering hope from the images of lingering touches and warm glances sheltered from the public eye. https://jmdelante.com/About-1 Thu, 02 Jun 2022 03:55:17 +0000 John Monic Delante https://jmdelante.com/About-1 John Monic Delante (b. 1998) is a visual artist based between Toronto and Cebu.
